Rogue antivirus, false alerts, false Windows security warnings are often deployed using Java exploits. Cybercriminals inject malicious code using Java exploits on websites that may otherwise be legitimate sites. If you encounter false warnings and alerts (known as scareware) turn off your PC, disconnect from the internet and call for support. The JAVA/CVE exploit is a (Microsoft) severe alert level and will propogate quickly on systems, disabling the system. The boot sector is also exploited and must be repaired (re-written) prior to removal of the threat.

You can help protect your systems by checking your Windows software, Flash player, and Java software is fully up to date.

Threats & Scams to look out for:
Phony Tech Support scam - a phone call purporting to be from Microsoft Support or a fictitious web based support firm, to inform you they have detected a virus on your PC. The caller then seeks access to your computer to download malicious code and ask for payment to remove it. They get your phone number from the White Pages. Report your scam story to the Australian Institute of Criminology - Consumer Fraud Taskforce 2011. Note that victims of this scam may receive a follow up call falsely claiming to be from government, law enforcement, or a bank. More info here
Facebook 1 in 6 links infected - be careful what you are clicking on in Facebook. The latest Threat Report from Symantec suggests social media sites such as Facebook are being targeted by cyber crims with one thing in mind - getting your money. An example is the "Hottest & Funniest Golf Course Video" link.
The Fashion Site Driveby - people are buying fashion from websites in Australia and overseas and cyber crims are hijacking these sites to inject malicious downloads of false antivirus alerts and rogue programs. (see above) If you have been infected, saying "no" to the pop up will install another instance of the rogue program and eventually shutdown your system. If you have these pop ups warning you about viruses turn off your PC or laptop and call us. If you act quickly we can remove these threats without too much disruption.
